How well do you think the local resorts are going to be able to hold up during this next week or so of warm temps? Could we see a lot of entire resorts shutting down and rebuilding from scratch? Or is there enough base in the area to last until they can make snow again?
You'll see a few/many ski resorts shut down, but when the cold weather returns they won't have to start from scratch. There will still be snow on the slopes (perhaps not enough to ski, hence the reason they'll close) but they'll also have their snowpiles that they can use to help get a base re-established.
UNLESS... the 10 day forecast on the weather channel is showing ZERO nights of below freezing weather as far north as Mercersburg, PA. I have a hard time believing that there's going to be ten straight nights of above freezing temps in PA in early January, but if that's true, the local hills (Liberty, Roundtop, Whitetail) will be in serious, serious pain by the time it cools down again. If it cools down again. Sigh.
I was really hoping to go skiing next friday night with some friends at whitetail but now i am wondering if they will even be open. At the moment there are no nights that are predicted to be below freezing from now until then. Also, the rain they are predicting does not look too good. Is it possible that they will be fully out of operation by then???

Things are not going so well in New England either. Most resorts trail counts are way down. It's this rotten, stinkin' weather pattern that we are stuck in. It figures. I cancelled my western trip this year and that's where the the snow is.
The current 10-day on weather.com for Mercersburg, PA, Davis, WV, & Cass, WV looks miserable. Consistently warm temps, several possible rain events, and only a few possible snowmaking nights (even assuming mountain temps are much colder than the town temps.) Ugh!

My friend just got back from the Copper/Breck area and she was not over impressed, icy and lumpy a lot like here. I'm sure coverage was better but apparantly according to her it wasn't the best riding to be had
I cancelled my trip to Timberline last weekend and this coming weekend. At this point, I'm beginning to worry about MLK.

Ahhh maaan! I don't want to hear that! I am going to Coppper/Breck the second week of February! Hopefully things will be much bettr by than. 
I'm sorry dude just reporting what I heard. She hit Keystone and Breck (Breck being her old local stomping ground) and even in the areas she usually goes that are generally free of tourists it was not all that good. Still there is a month to go to your trip and it looks like they're getting the better part of the jet stream right now so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Colorado can often be a bit sketchy for cover in January (relatively speaking, of course, and talking about blacks, double blacks and off trail.) February is mid-season, so you won't have any problems.
There is a storm brewing out there for the next couple days(kenehora) hopefully by Feb the coverage should be much better.
I was at Copper Breck & Vail a couple weeks ago, and the skiing was great, a little hard in some spots but not too shabby. At Breck if you stay away from the more crowded areas it was much better, we spent most of our time on Peak 10 skiing bumps. At Copper we had 5" fresh, so no problem there, except that some of the harder terrain wasn't open.
I'm headed to the 'Boat the 2nd & 3rd weeks of February it should be pretty good by then.
I think i'm just going to break out my mountain board again and start cutting turns on that. Maye Bryce has the right idea, during the summer they have grass skiing and mountainboarding. We should just give up on this and switch to that.
Sorry the fever is kicking in.
I'm in the same boat. in the last 2 weeks, i surfed more than i rode and i live super close to Roundtop. just can't get into it with these conditions.
