Thinking of going to Seven Springs on Friday. Can anyone give me the best way to get there from Chesapeae, VA? What is best room price in Somerset?

Yahoo maps says what I figured, the traditional way up 64, 95, 270/70 and PA turnpike (something like 6hrs?): http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?ed=xTowJ...amp;tcountry=us
This would be fine if you pass the DC area before or after the afternoon rush (3pm-7pm).
If you are coming thru then, you might get creative and go out 64 to 81, then hook into 70 at Hagerstown, MD because rush hour up 270 ain't pretty.
There are lots of $50+/- motel rooms in Somerset, some of the mom and pop variety and though I'm not a regular up there, I would expect you could find one last minute when you arrive Friday night. There are chain motels too if you want to reserve a room over internet or phone.

If you are coming from DC you will want to get off at the Somerset exit. There are a bunch of Ramada, Days Inn type of hotels right there. Somerset is about 30 minutes from the mountain. Closer lodging can be had in Donegal PA. There is a small local place called the Log Cabin Inn in Donegal that is about 8 miles from the mountain. Resort lodging may also be available but will run you 150 - 250 a night, if it is available. You can also google for B&B's in the area of Champion, PA.

I paid $146 for a room in the main hotel, and they allowed me to get it for just one night--that's why I decided to splurge and check it out.

Days Inn in Somerset had a sign advertizing $37 rooms.

If you decide to take the 64 & 81 route, try taking Rt. 37 just before Winchester and then take 522 north. It runs into Interstate 70 which takes you to the turnpike. 37 and most of 522 are 4 lanes. Saves a little time. We drive that route from Luray, VA and it takes about 3 hours.

dashiell, I live here in Portsmouth and travel to 7Springs often. The route that works best for me is 64W to 95N (Richmond) get off on 17N at Fredricksburg to bypass DC (where traffic usually is a mess) (Sorry Guys) Anyway stay on 17N till I-66W, go a few miles and get off again on 17N which will take you to Winchester and pick up I-81N to I-70N to Breezewood. Usually takes about 6 to 61/2 hours. BYW haven't tried the alternative route mentioned in the post before this one but sounds interesting.

Have Fun,
Doug

I agree with anyone who says you should avoid DC at rush hours (These are varied by day and location approximatly 7-9:30 AM and 3:30-7:00 PM). For anyone who isn't used to it and who doesn't know what they are doing traffic near DC is probably best avoided. If you can either plan your route arround the city or plan to drive through at off peak times. If you have to do it alot at least 1 additional hour to your trip.

I would stay away from DC from about 2:00 PM on Fridays. It gets real nasty early and its not just outbound either. If you can't avoid it travel with a partner and you can take advantage of HOV lanes (i.e. on 270)

I switched my flex day to Monday because I found it to be virtually impossible to beat the mad dash out of the city on Friday. Also, Monday is a great day to ski.
