I just found this site about a week ago, it's a great resource. Anyway, I learned to ski in the mid-Atlantic about 20 years ago, but haven't skied around here in a long time(lived in Colorado from 1993-2001, moved to the Norfolk area in Dec 2001).

I went back to CO on 1/10-14 and skied a day at Loveland (sort of a "local" CO ski area), and remembered how much fun skiing is. So, me and a friend decided to go out to Wintergreen this past Monday. We spent most of the day in the "Highlands" area, which was much less crowded than the rest of the area.

Overall, I got the following impressions of Wintergreen:

Pros:
Pretty good lift capacity
Good use of snowmaking
Good terrain given the limitations of the
environment
Decent food at the cabin we ate at

Cons:
Every trail was groomed! Where are the
bumps?
Snow conditions were good to start with,
but (predictably) got pretty icy by the
end of the afternoon
$49 lift ticket price didn't seem like a
good value

Overall, it was pretty fun, but I think I'll
try to go to Snowshoe next time, although it's a bit farther..

There are discounted Lift tickets at Ski Chalet for Winter Green.

http://skichalet.com/2002/ski/local.shtml

knocks the weekend price from $49 to $41. Its like a free lunch

Thanks for the tip. I was used to getting discounts at grocery stores in CO, but didn't realize that Ski Chalet had discounts here. Unfortunately, Richmond (their closest location to Hampton) is quite far from me. I guess that if I was going on an overnight trip, I could stop in Richmond on the way there, though..

Wintergreen used to cut rates significantly in early March. You might check for that later this year. Massanutten VA, Whitetail PA, Liberty PA and some other areas usually reserve at least one trail for bumps. Correct, Snowshoe usually has several bumpy trails, including a significant one, Lower Shays Revenge. Another mid-atlantic place for serious ski terrain is Blue Knob PA. They have several bumpy trails and steep glades, but conditions there can be tricky.
