Just checking if anyone knows Timberlines estimated closing date. Is it Easter?
March 22, 2015 unless you are a sledneck then you can play on the snow the weekend of 28th/29th.
Yes. Management has decided to close one weekend earlier than they have in the recent past. Traditionally they have stayed open all weekends in March. As a long time family season pass holder this tells me a lot about how management values the season pass holders that shell over a significant amount of money during the summer months when revenues are at the lowest. After the mountain performance this year it is just adding insult to injury. I for one will have to think very hard about sending my season pass money in early this year. They seem able to value the additional monies they will recieve from the snowmobilers but don't account for the possibility that current season pass holders might start to make other plans after being treated so shabbily.
Easter? No they won't be open then. They are closing so they can host a snowmobile race on March 31. Collecting a fee from 20 snowmobilers seems to be more important to them than the 500 or so season pass holders who support the resort every year. Timberline ski season traditionally ended on the first Sunday in April. You should start a discussion on their facebook page, might be interesting.
Not sure why they cannot close Monday through Thursday and reopen for a final weekend on the 27-29th and have the sled race in April.

Although, I thought the snowmobile race went OK last year? I guess they want to be sure they have snow for the race.

Now that was pure genious. I really hate to say Snowshoe is open both earlier and later than tline. yikes.
Anyone know about the state park ski area ?
They think this stuff doesn't matter but how your customers perceive you can be really important when a business really needs their customers support. Imagine if Chip Chase needed a capital infusion to keep Whitegrass going and did a Snowfunding similar to what T-Line is doing. All the good will that he has built over the years treating his customers like they are family would be rewarded I'm sure. Unfortunately for T-Line the converse is also true.
This pretty much says it all:
Snowshoe - 20,000+/- season pass holders, professional operation
Timberline - 500? Season pass holders, seemingly amateur operation

Did Timberline open all of their trails yet this year?
The mountain is basically all open. Conditions were great this weekend reminding us all why we love this mountain so much. Fantastic spring like conditions. Which only reminds one why losing a weekend in March is such a killer for hard core skiers that frequent Timberline.

Second that. Mountain ops has done an excellent job, I think, of opening pretty much the whole hill with solid snow conditions in a tough natural snow year. Even the Orange chair liftline (Thunderdraft) was open this weekend on natural snow and blowover only, and looked skiable though thin. Just another reminder of how good that place could be with the capital to maintain infrastructure and not have to look for short term cash hits like snowmobile races.
I did about a dozen runs on Thunderdraft on Sunday. A bit thin side to side but plenty of snow right up the middle. It was great fun. That is such a nice little bump run. Unfortunately, bumps haven't developed yet on The Drop and Off the Wall was still pretty hard most of the weekend (maybe it softened up late afternoon Sunday. So trees and bumps haven't really hit their best yet but I'm still hopeful. Snow was hero though.
I've received some interesting information regarding the closing date and the resort's pending future which, if I posted, would be sure to upset someone who monitors this site. Needless to say, I think the snomobile race is a por attempt at a cash grab as is the other thing they are doing. Neither can or will produce enough revenue to do much for the resort. Many of us have invested in the area by purchasing houses/condos that we rent to the resort's customers. Without our investments, the uniqueness if the resort would be greatly lessened. I was a season pass holder for about 15 years before doing ski school there. They stayed open through mid April inthe past as had pride in that fact. Now they have one of the shortest seasons in the mid atlantic. That's not a pride thing. Bottom line is that there will be some changes... BIG changes coming.
I was there this weekend and the conditions were really good. My 8 up son skied Thunderdraft on Saturday, which was his first "black diamond". He was super stoked.
I havent been to Timberline in over 10 years, but I didn't remember the lift lines being that long.
For the regulars here, was this a "standard" Saturday? I noticed at 12:00 the line for lift tickets was wrapped around the building.
Saturday lines were very long for a non-holiday weekend, I thought. (I'm an every weekend type.) However, part of the reason may have been that the lifties had to skip every third or fourth chair on the Silver Queen lift to limit the weight on the lift to keep it running properly. Obviously that decreased the effective uphill capacity of that lift and created longer lines.
Odd thing was that the liftlines on Sunday were almost non-existent, even in the morning. Usually the liftlines are substantial on Sundays through about Noon or 1pm, and then disappear as skiers head home.
Sounds like another lift issue, anybody know why Silver Queen can not be fully loaded?
Something doesn't smell right. Tucker might know more about that.
I'm being careful here, out of respect for Scott's ground rules, only to report what I have firsthand knowledge about. Silver Queen lift broke down Saturday afternoon of MLK weekend and was not reopened until Sunday midday. Lift operators told me that since that time, they have had to load the lift below capacity (i.e. skip chairs) to keep the problem from recurring. Their description of the problem leads me to believe that it has to do with the emergency brake engaging prematurely, From what I can see, this is not in any way a safety issue...even on MLK weekend, they were able to run the lift slowly after it broke until all the skiers on the lift had reached the top. I personally rode this lift all weekend this past weekend without any worries. But it does limit their uphill capacity, for sure.

I don't think we'll be hearing from Tucker any more...

It's true...word on the street is that Tucker is officially only a DCSki lurker from now on...stepped out of line and had the hammer dropped on his account...
Well I'll be a mother trucker...sometimes the truth not only hurts, but it downright stings! I lurk as well and can act as a medium to channel the truth regardless of your online status. The truth is all that we ask for...just the truth.

I'm not sure what this is about, but no "hammer" has been dropped on any accounts, as far as I'm aware.
geez sooooo much drama on dcski revolving around canaan valley, wv?! this is the land of bliss... and i wonder if all this makes people who have never been here, think twice about it. let's all just go cross-country skiing, and realize how awesome skiing here can be! except right now... it's a little crusty out there! :)
That is the point. Suppress revenue to allow positive “big” changes to occur at our favorite resort.
