Small West Virginian Ski area To Re-Open
Bucking the trend of small ski area closures, Oglebay Park will reopen to skiers after seven years out of action. An active fund-raising campaign has led to the purchase of a new ski lift and new snow-making equipment. The entire facility will also be handicapped accessible for the first time.
$1.2 million has been spent to allow the area to reopen, including a $275,000 grant from the National Park Service's Land and Water Fund, the remainder - about $925,000 - from private donations. An "Honor Roll" plaque recognizing the generosity of the many donors will be displayed at the lower level of the Ski Lodge. Based on their level of spending, donors will be categorized as Green, Blue, Black Diamond, or Double Black Diamond. Anyone who wishes to contribute should contact the Oglebay Foundation at (304) 243-4166.
In 1997, amid a series of mild winters, the commission decided it could no longer afford the cost of making snow with its old, inefficient snow-making equipment. Unfortunately, the commission also could not afford to replace its snow-making system, which was installed in the 1960s at the ski slope, adjacent to a golf course.
The new lift, a triple chair constructed by Partek Enterprises, will replace the park's inactive Poma lift. The snowmaking system will get a new pump house, new pumps, new high-pressure water lines, new electrical service and new snow guns. The new equipment is able to produce five to six times as much snow as the old system. The park also recently bought a used snow-grooming machine.
It's in Northern WV, near Wheeling, just west of Pittsburgh.
