according to their website brighton (utah) is looking to open by next week.
Chad - correct! One week from this friday! Here is a shot off my deck at The Canyons ... the hill on the right is Peak 5 .... looking good!
Crush,
Man, I gotta get a job out in Utah. Here in the Mid-Atlantic, we'll be lucky if anything gets going by Thanksgiving!
I'm jealous!! Anyway, make some turns for us east-coasters

Anybody skied Alta or Snowbird in early November? (first or second week)
My schedule looks like it might be possible -- with a lot of effort and calling in a bunch of favors.
I'm itching to go, but don't want to be all premature and end up skiing rocks and grass.
Tonight, I'll just sit and stare at my skis and drool. At least tomorrow, the Cardinals will distract me a few hours from powder dreams.

Boy..Ck out all this enthusiam for this early snow! Last year when canaan vly recieved over 2 feet of april powder I barely heard a peep out of anyone. Chill dudes..& pace yourself the winter is long.
Warren - I know how it is having lived in DC for so many year ... gave up a *lot* to be here but I woke up to that scene this morning ... been grinning all day!!!
MangyM - Shoot for the third week and I think you will be ok (it won't open until the 18th anyway...but there is a possiblity of it happening sooner). It is usually wet and heavy,a little tracky on the ungroomed but I had a good time around the same time last season. NOAA reports that Alta has around 60" of snowfall up to today, Brighton has a 40" base so I guess Alta is similar.
Crush, your breakin' my heart!!!!

Squaw Valley opens today with 5+ feet of white stuff, Sierra-at-Tahoe opens Friday and so does Brighton UT with a good hunk of terrain open.
Dang! .. wish I had enuf leave time to bail for a couple of days!
Dudez - OMG we are set to be hammered! Brighton will have the earliest opening date (this Friday) in 20 years! Ullr be praised!
Tahoe or Salt LAke City?
I have a pretty good shot of taking a three-day trip mid-to late November.
I know the Frontier Airlines flight out of Baltimore puts you slopeside by mid-day in Salt Lake. Is there something similar for Tahoe?
They're getting a boatload of snow out there!!

If you could get a straight flight into Reno you might could pull it off (Reno is about 45 minutes from Heavenly).
My buddy in San Jose called me yesterday to rub it in. He was driving to Kirkwood for his first turns of the year.
Check out Best Western in Truckee. 15 to 45 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from Northstar. Truckee shuttle or rentaSUV will take you where you need to go.

There is a non-stop Jet Blue flight out of Dulles to Sacramento in the evening. Gets you in around 11:30 PT. From there its a 2.5 hour drive to South Lake Tahoe (Heavenly). I recommend staying at a motel in Sacramento that night and driving to Tahoe early the next morning; 1st tracks were at 9 am last year, I assume the same this year. I dont recall what the return flight was like but for $180 RT you can't miss!
If you want an early trip I think Utah is the ticket this year. The early snow at Tahoe wil be there but I think it will get Icy with day temps getting up to the upper 40's & low 50's with lows well below freezing.I'll bet as warm as its been in the east that the thanksgiving skiing will be good.
Crush, Where are you? Thought you would have filed the first ski report of the season.

LOL right here! Yup went to Brighton Friday and Sunday .... it rocked! I could not believe it .... conditions were just like in January with lots of powder 6-12 inches good stuff not too heavy. Lots of base; cover was not an issue. But there were so many people on opening day that we could not get into the parking lot they were turning people away so we parked down the road at Guardsman's Pass and walked 25 minutes to Brighton. One woman parked all the way down in Solitude and walked to Brighton!!!! But it was totally worth it.
Sunday it snowed so much that they closed Big Cottonwood Canyon ... we got through about 1/2 hour before they closed it ... and it was another awesome day yesterday with another foot or so of fresh.
Hope it keeps up! And Snowbird opens at the end of this week!
Crush,
Did you ride the Great Western lift for me? That's one of my favorite parts of Brighton

I talked to a friend of mine from California who skied at Kirkwood over the weekend. He said it was Bluebird skies with knee high powder on the ground.
