Sugar Mountain is open today.  Cataloochee opens tomorrow morning, Nov. 19.  So most likely there will be skiing over Thanksgiving weekend after the warm up expected early next week.

Beech and App are waiting until there is more chance of not losing a new base in less than a week of turning on the snow guns.

Here's a partial list of opening dates around the county in Nov. 20-30.  Note that in some cases, the first few days or weeks are for passholders only.  Not all the recent changes have been delays.  A few places out west will end up opening earlier than announced because of recent snowstorms.  Delays are happening for two reasons, the usual weather issues and/or COVID-19 restrictions.

Here's an updated list of random places I'm paying attention to for one reason or another.  There are actually quite a few resorts already open in other regions.  Delayed openings I've heard about lately have been to low snow or warm weather.  Still early season after all.  NC ski areas that will be open this weekend include Sugar, Cataloochee, App, and Beech.  Hopefully can stay open next week if the cold hangs around long enough.

The dates for Timberline and Massanutten aren't official.

Dec 4: Snowshoe, WV - was Nov 25
Dec 5: Whiteface, NY - was Nov 27, then Dec 4
Dec 5: Gore, NY
Dec 5: Beech Mountain, NC
Dec 7: Solitude, UT - was Nov. 20
Dec 10: Sugarbush, VT - was Nov 21, then Dec 3
Dec 11: Smuggler’s Notch, VT - was Nov 27, then Dec 4

Dec 12?: Timberline, WV
Dec 18: Aspen Highlands, CO - was Dec 12
Dec 19?: Massanutten, VA

Email from Massanutten on Dec. 7 indicated a Mid-December opening date. Nothing more specific than that yet.

T'line and even CV getting more snow today and snowmaking on full blast. Timberline has been making snow for 60+ hours straight now and they are now going to start switching to other areas of the mountain. Wouldn't be surprised if they do open up this weekend.

I have a story with a few more details here.  I haven't seen any firm opening dates from Canaan Valley Resort, Wisp, or Timberline yet.

Looks like Roundtop won't open this Saturday: twitter.com

However Jack Frost is opening: facebook.com

Debating whether I should still get my Covid test today to head up to PA. Is the drive to JF worth the extra 2 hours each way for a few trails?

Regarding skiing PA as a non-resident. I've heard from reliable source at least one ski area views testing is required only if one stays longer than 24 hours. So if a day visitor at a 'day hill'.....

So take or discard that as you may. ;-)

A ski area's thoughts on the matter are probably irrelevant, as they're not responsible for enforcing the state law.  According to this story in The Morning Call, Pennsylvania state and local police plan on relying largely on voluntary compliance of visitors and do not plan on setting up checkpoints.  If it becomes clear that a lot of violations are occurring, though, that enforcement policy could change on a dime.  And it would be simple for them to set up a checkpoint at the entrance/exit of a ski resort.  It would also be an obvious (and newsworthy) story if a bunch of out-of-state residents were flagrantly violating the law and congregating at PA ski areas -- which could end up hurting a ski area and cause aggressive enforcement actions to occur if there's a community backlash.  In the eyes of many people, skiing is a luxury activity and I don't think there would be much sympathy for skiers ignoring the guidelines.  Of course, this has a heavy toll on the tourism industry as well -- tourism is off by over 50% in Pennsylvania this year.

It's a pretty unfortunate situation all around.

Jack Frost doesn't have much vertical and if it's just a few trails open, I would not go to the trouble. I went once long ago, it was fine, but I was with a friend and stayed the night before in Pennsylvania, I think.

I think Bryce has similar vertical.

If you are a Montgomery County resident you can get a free test just about any day of the week. You may not get the results fast though: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/testing.html

Seven Springs web site says they will reopen beginning full time this Friday, 12/18. Hidden Valley will open for the season on Friday. Both 7S and HV will open at noon Friday. No opening day set for Laurel but my guess is mid-week next week at the latest. They usually open with all of their snowmaking trails. Maybe this will be the first time that most of the natural snow trails will open too. Further east on the Allegheny Front, Blue Knob will reopen Friday at 10 am.

Yet again you have to give Bryce credit for being one of the first local resorts to open.   They surely received some helpful snow yesterday, but even without that they had been making snow and are one of the more efficient resorts about getting terrain open without natural snow.

Whitetail just tweeted they are open Sunday at 9 am. The implication is they will not open tomorrow as scheduled.

twitter.com

Liberty also tweeted they will be open Sunday at 10 am. Roundtop tweeted they will be open Saturday at 9 am.

Grass skiing is tough! :-)

Bryce would have opened without the snow storm. But the storm made everything so much better.

They had rentals for only about 20$ and a lesson was not much more but I skipped that because they were just hanging on the rope tow/ flat area and I figured I needed some more movement ( not saying speed because it wasn’t that fast) for less friction and easier stearing so went directly to the chair and had fun!  back in the day being on longer skis up to 210’s  and going on surfaces like the plastic white mats they used to use at Killington to get you passed the bare spots and actually skiing on grass with real skis to get down some trails I was somewhat prepared

I first heard of the grass skiing at Bryce when they had a front page picture on the Weekend section of the Washington post, Horst was a contemporary of one of my old friends Karl Platner so he thought it was fine that I went without instructions
