A few times in recent years, I have taken some PTO in December for skiing. I had hoped to go to Massanutten, but they never had both black diamond runs open. Will this storm increase the likelihood of that happening?

I would think they would still need several days of good snowmaking to get both open. I will be there on Friday for the early opening for passholders and will report on conditions.

The storm won't make much difference.  Several days of cold weather is more important.  DJ will be open on Opening Day, which is supposed to be Dec. 19.  Paradice typically doesn't open until early Jan at the earliest.  Takes the most snow because it's wide and long.  Given that most people who ski Mnut don't ride Lift 6 at all, it's not a priority for the holiday period.  Getting a deep base on Upper and Lower Showtime is more important.  Lower Showtime gets sun so it melts there pretty fast unless the base is really deep.

I am hoping that when I am there Friday there will be enough snow to play around a bit on the sides of DJ but I will be happy just to make any turns!

I realize it's wishcasting on my part, but I hope Massanutten recognizes they have a chance to capture some more visitors and get it all open earlier. I typically ski in Pennsylvania, but can't right now.

I don't think it's really that much lack of interest but more the realities of the snowmaking infrastructure.  Although now there is plenty of water, my impression is that blowing snow on DJ and Paradice at the same time really doesn't work.  During early season, also need a lot of snow to get Upper and Lower Showtime started.

In short, need a lot of cold days, as well as cold nights, that make snowmaking in Dec a sure thing for weeks, not just a few days.

While Mnut would obviously like to get new people interested, tickets will sell out on weekends and during the holidays periods.  People who aren't property owners or resort guests can't check for ticket availability until 10 days before a given date.  Have you looked to see if tickets are available when you might be interested to make the drive?

I see tickets available for skiing Massanutten for this Friday, Saturday, Sunday... I think Wye has something there,  they can get new people to go there with the situation in Pa, getting a good dump early season definitely helps prep trails to be ready sooner, I hope you make it out and enjoy yourself , I have had some sweet times in the trees in early season deep snow , if posting pictures was easy I would have done some trip reports

Posting pictures should be easy on the “new” DCSki. Just drag and drop, or click the image icon at the top of the text area and choose a file from your computer. There are some limitations on size and file type, but I put a lot of time and engineering into making this as simple as possible.

 Hey Vermont,

Let us know if you hit up Mnut. Just in case you were thinking of going this Friday (12/18), that is a special "preview day" for passholders and property owners.

I'm not interested until they get DJ and Paradice both open. I am carrying over almost two weeks of PTO, so a mid-week daytrip is seemingly doable all things being equal. We'll see.
