Well, since we may be 10 days away yet from turning the guns on, let's start the T'line thread!

Long range forecast looks better starting around the 13th, although daytime highs are still low 40s at least in Davis

Same in the Laurel Highlands, unfortunately, I guess in both cases it'll depend on management's aggressiveness with snowmaking.

Someone mentioned night skiing at Timberline in another thread.  The website has Winter Season Hours starting on Jan. 2 going to 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with the lift to the summit closing at 4:30pm as usual.  Will also be night skiing during holiday periods.

Discovered that the first weekend of Jan, Feb, and Mar will be College Weekends.  Listed under Events on the Timberline website.

"Present your current, valid college ID at the ticket window to receive special college pricing: Daily lift tickets for $60.00 for a single day, $55.00 each for two days, or $50 for all three days; ski or snowboard rentals for $29 for a single day or $24 each for 2-3 days."

Based on the current long range forecast for the rest of November, there is no question that Timberline will be able to open by Thanksgiving, or earlier, if they want to. Last year they opened the weekend after Thanksgiving with a very limited weather window to make snow.

Not really about Timberline, but it turns out that Perfect North in southeast Indiana will have a new blue trail and more lights for the 2022-23 season.  The new trail is on one side of the lower mountain and can be access from two lifts.  There is a video with drone footage on their website.

Seconded about the Thanksgiving weekend opening being likely. They'll have time to advertise once they're sure they'll make it without blowing out a main or losing power or something. They can get more snowmaking done this coming week without worrying about skiers in the way. And they can't get bragging rights for first in the Southeast (not that they usually would - Cat and Sugar are *really* aggressive).

I actually saw it on their facebook page.  Looking at the cams they have Dew Drop pushed out and they said that Twister and Salamander would be open along with White Lightening.  You can see whales on white Lightening on the cam but they have not been pushed out yet.

I did not see anything on their website, but they did post something to their FB page on Saturday saying "60% to 70% of terrain available, including...Salamander, Twister, White Lightning, and Dew Drop".

60%-70% of their 20 runs with snowmaking means 12-14 runs, which of course includes the shorter runs down from mid station, probably a couple of the short green "runs" on top, etc. But even having the 4 top to bottom runs listed above is impressive for the end of November.

These days Facebook and Instagram are much more likely to have the latest info about snowmaking status during early season.  Updating websites is rarely a high priority for small ski resorts like Timberline or Cataloochee.  The GM is more likely to be out helping with snowmaking or grooming than spending time on social media.

Really great for WV skiing to have 2 good options for Thanksgiving weekend. Looks like a good selection of runs for Snowshoe, including the blues Spruce, Gandy, and lower Ballhooter. I think usually for Thanksgiving they have Gandy or Spruce and a few greens.

RE: the number of TL runs, I would guess someone just miscounted and needed to do a quick manual update to the website.

Conditions pretty much as expected. Little bumpy and rough with some death cookies but good coverage. For time of year and first day it’s very good.

In addition to being cashless, can have credits on the RFID card used for lift access.  Last season they let me use credits from the previous season.  The first time I got a credit was when I and my ski buddy did a day trip from Massanutten.  We got a credit for stopping before 12:30.  The credit could be used for food or in the shop.  Was good for ice cream before we hit the road.

No ice yet :-), good amount of people but never had a line longer that a minute.  4 top to bottom runs.  No lines in the ticket office as I passed through.  Lots of staff at the lift to manage things.  Ripped through 19 runs in 3 hours and my thighs said no to run 20, my earliest opening day yet, previous was a Black Friday several years ago.

Well executed by Timberline, maybe even say it was a "perfect" day.

Anyone stay at the Alpine Lodge in Davis lately?  How about the Billy Motel?  I know about Canaan Valley Lodge and the Blackwater Lodge.  The Timberline Hotel requires a 2 night stay.  Trying to decide where to stay for a night in early January.  Driving over from Massanutten to ski Timberline for a couple days with a friend.

That works for me.  The 1960s was the first decade I can remember staying in motels in the northeast on driving trips with my parents and older brother.  Thanks.

I've stayed at the Billy Motel a few times and liked it. Rooms are a bit small but very well kept. There is a fun lobby area where you can get drinks and light food - last year they were renovating this area, so you might want to check the status of that.

If you end up staying at Alpine Lodge I would be curious to get your impressions. I have never stayed there but I would also be fine with a place that is dated but clean.

Another possibility you can look into (at a higher price point) is the Inn at Canaan.

Good to know.  I haven't spent any time in town so being in Davis is a plus for this trip.  The Alpine website mentions recent renovations, but I don't know if that means in 2022 or work done a few years ago.

I've heard the rooms at the Billy are very nice. But, I'll jump in on the bar. They did a renovation and if you haven't been there since, you will be amazed. They blew the back of the old bar out and its now 4 times larger if not more. Great vibe. Large bar and booth seating. Personally, the best bar in the area.

Any thoughts on conditions Sunday?  It looks like a good bit of rain tomorrow then a refreeze.  I can't wait to hit the slopes but that sounds like conditions could be crummy.

Timberline has posted a calendar on their home page that shows lifts will be open Fri-Sun until Dec. 18 for sure.  Won't be open Mon-Thu, Dec. 5-8 and perhaps the following Mon-Thu too.  That will allow full-on snowmaking midweek whenever possible until mid-December.

Skied Timberline yesterday and they have huge bases on their open terrain, looks like three to six feet to me. Heading over again today for some soft spring like skiing and looks like tomorrow will be groomed hardpack with maybe some fresh man made snow if they turn the guns on tonight. Get it before the crowds show up later in the month.

Awesome day Friday at Timberline - skiing the Bronze pass this year.  Snow held up well- variety of conditions, but all nice snow as partly cloudy skies gave way to a bluebird day that saw temps climb to the 50's.  This is looking down White Lightning.  Lapped all day until 3 when we had had enough.  Did I miss any DC skiers out there...?

... Timberline continues to impress, with fantastic coverage, excellent grooming, friendly, upbeat staff.  Keep it up Team Perfect!

Sunday was another awesome day at Timberline. They made enough snow overnight to make the slopes powdery and most of the powder lasted all day. Twister and White Lightning were both wonderful. Seems like they are making more snow on skiers right of White Lightning than the last two years,  and that is where the best skiing was today. 1670199779_pdqbcjdmubic.jpg

Agree on Sunday conditions, really couldn't ask for better man made early season snow.  We skied until our legs gave out, no lines, no crowds.

Having Twister open this early also takes a good bit of pressure off Dew Drop.

They moved a few of the guns into the slope to help the coverage on the skiers right on White lighting. Plus, put new "longer throw" guns on White Lighting. So, that is improving the coverage. I also understand they are planning to let the area to the skiers left under the guns bump up this year.

It would be great if they let the left side of WL bump up after covering the whole slope, but I hope that means they will keep either the Drop or Off the Wall groomed for most of the season.

In general I am more in favor of keeping OTW as an advanced bump run. The problem, of course, is that the inevitable thaw/refreeze cycle can lead to some pretty tough conditions.

Amen, they run a top notch operation that makes top notch quality powder snow. Those folks run an operation in Indiana that has 5X the amount of skiers coming through the doors as they do here, so they know exactly how to run a good business.   Sometimes conditions like hummidity level, dew points or inversions can play a big part in making good quality snow, so they know exactly when to flip the switch that is capable of covering a majority of the mountain with sweet fluff almost overnight :)   Couldnt have possibly been a better company to take over that mountain. We are blessed to have them here!

Canaan is electrically limited on the upper mountain - they *should* have plenty of air water guns to run up there, but they make interesting decisions occasionally.

What is the difference between Timberline and Canaan Valley? Looking for some places to lodge at either one and some of these spots on vrbo are unclear if its timberline or canaan valley.  Also, how is the drive up to Timberline? Is it like snowshoe where theres a 10 mile uphill climb (dont mind the climb up to snowshoe but i have a smaller car)?

Thanks!

virtually nothing except canaan has not opened yet...they are both on the same eastern ridge of canaan valley with tline on cabin mtn and cvr on weiss knob...whitegrass cross country resort is nestled between them...davis and thomas are around 12 miles away and the valley is served by an excellent wvdot crew...both from the northern and southern end...the ride into the valley is nowhere near the trek up to the shoe...flat roads in the valley off 32 to the resorts...enjoy after sat as there could be 6" of fresh upslope after the rain/ice event...yew!

other differences

tline high speed 6 pack with padded seats and fixed grip quad to midstation...cvr fixed grip quad with midstation unload then to top and triple to top with plastic seats

tline 1000' vert...most runs are top to bottom with consistent pitch except the blacks that are steep then run out to the flats...cvr 850` vert with lots of flats spots

both have a looong green beginner from the top

both areas get the same amount of snow but the meadows at cvr are the sheeite after a dump

i'm not a xc skier but whitegrass is one of the top 5 xc ski areas in the usa and an excellent place to ski snowshoe eat and visit

If you're asking about the difference with regard to location, both are located in Canaan Valley.  If the VRBO is saying they are located in Timberline, that's the gated subdivision that is on the same mountain as Timberline.  If they are saying Canaan Valley, then it could be anywhere in the valley, i.e. anywhere along 32 south of Davis and north of CVR.  But Timberline subdivision is also considered Canaan Valley.

If you are staying somewhere in Canaan Valley, once you are on 32 there shouldn't be any issues getting to the Timberline Mountain.  Not like at Snowshoe.  But there are some rental properties that are hard to access in winter without AWD or chains, so if you're concerned you should vet the properties location.

Was there yesterday (Wednesday, 12/14). Great groomed snow and 4 top to bottom trails. I literally skied on trails by myself for over an hour. I didn't see another person besides the lift attendants. They had music playing and it was a great day. Every person that was working was friendly and super chatty. What a great atmosphere!

Got in 22 runs in under 4 hours and my legs were done. A great first day to the season. They had every snow gun primed and ready to go (I watched them connecting the lines as I went up the lift). You can visually see all the new and updated snow making guns.

When I left at 2:30, you could easily still find untracked corduroy on every trail. Great day!

Curious, I noticed they removed Lower White Lightning from this year's map. Anyone have the scoop on it?

Glad to see the night skiing back in the Valley it will be an added bonus for things to do at night on the weekends.

Looks like lower White is now part of a glades area on the map. I assume that means no snowmaking?  I also noticed that lower Almost Heaven has returned, last year it was a terrain park.

Actually I'm surprised they didn't move the Park to Lower White Lightning and add snowmaking its wide and has the length to build some good features. Of course, under the Quad would be a great trail. I was wondering why Winterset wasn't added for night skiing?

So, I'm thinking lower White is an over site on the map. I thought I saw some portable guns sitting on it when I was there a week ago. The terrain park crowd isn't going to be happy if they took the big park away. Lower Almost Heaven is wide enough to add park features, but also allow for groomed terrain to one side or the other.

Plus, I think the ski team likes to use lower White lightning for training.

What do you think of the new Timberline map more generally? On the old map, the quad appeared to go up about 1/3 of the way; on the new map, it appears to go about 2/3 of the way. I haven’t given it much thought but always assumed it was somewhere in between those two. Maybe trying to emphasize amount of terrain available for night skiing? Or maybe just different angle/perspective?

Here’s the old:

Timberline Mountain will be closed December 23rd, December 24th, and December 25th.
The forecast shows extreme low temperatures and high winds that may create dangerous conditions. The potential for power outages, bad roads, and exposure risk will be high. For the safety of our guests and staff, and with consideration of our local emergency services, the mountain will not be open for skiing and snowboarding this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The extreme low temperatures create an opportunity for over 72 hours of continuous snowmaking. This will allow us to get nearly 100% of terrain ready for Monday’s reopening. The silver lining of this rare weather event is that Timberline Mountain will have tons of snow and incredible conditions when we welcome you back on December 26th!

Looks like the winds  will moderate by Saturday or Sunday so a complete closure for the entire weekend seems like overkill. They could at least keep the mid mountain lift open and provide limited skiing for the crowds that will be in The Valley for the weekend. I have no plans to ski this weekend but I would very disappointed if I was there and couldn’t ski at least on Sunday.  I have skied in 5 degree and windy weather many times out west and up north. On the other hand folks may not have the clothes for that type of skiing in West Virginia so maybe this is best to prevent a mass frostbite epidemic.

They had always planned to be closed on Christmas day.  Not being open Friday might be a good decision based on the weather however, they could probably reopen on Saturday although it will be really cold.  The new management seems to make good decisions so no one should be too upset.

Well currently their website says they are closed Saturday and Sunday due to extreme weather. I don’t consider  a high of ten degrees (Sunday’s weather, and no extreme winds that day)  extreme weather for skiing.   Interestingly Snowshoe has announced it is open for the whole weekend because it is not going to close for winter weather.  Seven Springs hasn’t announced any closures as well. In any case let’s hope for some real snow this weekend to get the season going. Unfortunately currently looks like warmer and rainy weather moving into the New Year.

For people with the correct clothing, single digits is fine.  That's not as likely to be true of many people who mainly ski in the southeast and mid-Atlantic.  The road conditions in WV is another consideration given that there could be people who were thinking of doing their first ski trip this weekend.  Meaning first winter driving experience on WV roads in nasty conditions.  Note that those people are unlikely to be reading an online ski forum.

As was posted earlier, the email update today included: "The forecast shows extreme low temperatures and high winds that may create dangerous conditions. Balmy compared to Lake Louise and Kicking Horse for the past week. In fact Kicking Horse closed today because of minus  31 Celsius temperatures.

Unfortunately the long range is still showing a warm up to above average for the east coast later next week.

The Fearless Forecast (posted Wednesday morning, link on the Whitegrass site) has a huge range of possible snow totals - 2 to 16 inches over the 3 day period. Lots of uncertainty in how things will play out, with potentially huge gradients in snowfall amounts between locations that are only a few miles apart.

whitegrass.com

If we get closer to the upper end of that range I will try to get out on re-opening day (Dec 26) - otherwise I will probably wait until later in the week.

I skied there today. Took my father there with me for his 1st time there. We are 7 Springs based, so getting him to go anywhere else was a win.

The place was great. 100% of terrain was open with great coverage. Really impressed with how big the mountain skis for really only having 1 lift. The whole place was packed, but they did a great job. Parked in the overflow lot, and rode to the lodge in a wagon that was being towed by a farm tractor. We forgot our boots, so we rented skis and boots there, which was an easy and fast process. Staff were everywhere at the lifts to assist and keep people moving. The lodge had good food and cold beer. And to top it off, the sun was shining.

10/10 day at Timberline, I will be back again!

Heading to Timberline early next week.  Discovered the Tline base cam can be pointed in multiple directions this season.  The view can change based on "votes."  Could see three groomers headed back to the barn just before 9:00am.  Looks like there was snowmaking last night. :-)

Okay.  I'm not skiing Timberline until Monday.  Driving over from Massanutten first thing in the morning.  For sure there will be more snow at Timberline than Massanutten by then.  Looks like daytime high in the Canaan Valley may not get to freezing.

Had a very good time at Timberline this afternoon.  Skied almost all the trails just to see what the snow was like.  The Drop when it's all flat is . . . fast!  White Lightning had the best snow.

My friend who came with me is a cautious intermediate.  She loved Salamander.

We're staying at the Alpine Lodge in Davis.  Rooms are fine.  Good thing there is a microwave available in the laundry room.  There isn't any place open for dinner on Mondays right now.  We bought food at the supermarket.  As did a work crew that's staying at Alpine Lodge tonight too.

Timberline was amazing today.  This was my first time here under the relatively new management and they’ve done an amazing job. Among others things, the snow was great esp given that they’ve only had 16” of natural.  And I took a lesson — thanks Mike — that was top notch.

I think the nicest thing was the really great spirits of the employees — everyone I saw seemed to be glad to be on the mountain and the ski patrol had a.nice presence.  Finally, on the Sunday of MLK weekend the lines were manageable and I didn’t see any people skiing out of control on the mountain.

I will be back!

ski patrol closed the drop saturday because it was too icy I believe. It was open Sunday tho as well as Heaven.  upper Heaven was just opened Sunday for first time I think and was great whales!  Monday it was closed because a groomer lost a track and took a while to get it fixed and off the mtn. Kudos to Tline for reviving downhill skiing in the valley! couldn't have asked for a better outcome in ownership and management of it!

I was at Timberline yesterday. The Drop was closed, they said it was to preserve the snow for the weekend. Everything else was open and in good shape.

I took a run down The Drop on Monday, Jan. 9, before the MLK weekend.  Groomed completely flat.  I was doing controlled side slips speeding down the steeper top section given how icy it was all the way across.  Wasn't a run I cared to repeat.  Upper Almost Heaven was the only trail closed then.  Given how few people were around, didn't really need it.

According to the ski patrol person I spoke with on Saturday, they tried to open The Drop on Saturday but felt it was too icy to open safely. It was open on Sunday after a day of additional snowmaking.

When I was there on the Saturday of MLK weekend the lines really did not get shorter over lunchtime. I was riding the singles line so I generally got on in 10 minutes or less but I am curious what the wait times in the normal lines were this past weekend.

I didn't really check my watch, but maybe 15-20 minutes or so?  It was pretty steady most of the day.  It did slow down a little in the afternoon, but can't recall the time. I wasn't able to do the singles line unfortunately.  Beautiful day on Saturday.  Snow was OK, a little icier in spots than I was expecting, but overall decent snow.  Enough cover in some of the glades to pop in and out.

Both the drop and off the wall were fairly scraped off by noon. The rest of the day was pretty slick because those two trails don’t get much sun.  The rest of the mountain skied better.  I’m missing the whales and the bumps and getting tired of skiing groomed snow.

ah well. I planned a day of PTO tomorrow a couple weeks ago, rolling the dice that some of the longer term forecasts calling for snow would pay off. I'll probably just stick closer to home and do a half day at Massanutten instead (1 hr drive vs a 3 hr drive).

Agreed many times over. It was a huge disappointment that they got rid of the whales on those slopes.

I skied Monday and the The Drop was closed. OTW was open and groomed. Not bad—some ice in spots. Everything else was pretty good loose granular. I did 20 runs before noon. I wish more of those Saturday skiers would opt to ski midweek but that seems to be an industry wide issue and not just a TM issue. Saturday is always the most crowded day.

If you think there's firm/icy conditions now, they'd be absolutely glacial (in the ice sense) without grooming the steeps. I wish we had the weather to let those trails bump up properly.

I skied timberline on Thursday and it was absolutely EPIC. Groomed with lots of made man snow that piled up as the day went on. It was tree to tree coverage with lots of opportunities to play around at the edges of every trail. White lighting was the run of the day, the right hand side was an absolute blast! We skied onto the lift each time and never waited a second in line. The best conditions of the season and I am sure that this weekend was even better.

At Bryce this weekend and their snow is amazing considering their location. This is my newly turned 6 year old tenth day on the slopes (tenth lesson on the year) and he has been crushing the blues here. He told me at dinner, he is ready for timberline next year!

Enjoy the slopes!

Season passes for 2023-24 are on sale for Timberline.  Lowest prices are good until April 1.  For people who live in DC/NoVA and can ski midweek, the Bronze, Silver passes seem like very good deals.  Even better for a senior 60+.  Silver is $199 for 60+ and $299 for ages 13-59 and good every Mon-Fri.  Bronze is a bit less and good for one day during Mon-Fri each week.

A pass for next season is not valid for 2022-23 late season skiing.

Anybody have insight into Timberline's intentions for snowmaking for the rest of the season? We will be up there the 9th-12th. They will certainly have the ability to make some snow next week but idk if they have called it quits for the year.

It does look like March could be a cold month with less drenching rain and more opportunities for snow

Timberline hasn’t indicated what their specific goal is for March. The long range forecasts do look good for real snow and  snowmaking in March and so if Timberline wanted to stay open until the end of March or even early April they probably would not have any trouble doing so.

I seriously hope they take advantage. It shouldn't take much effort (1-2 days of snowmaking) for them to resurface the place make it another few weeks. Especially given it is supposed to snow daily starting next Thursday.

Governor’s cup is definitely next weekend. I called T-Line yesterday trying to get a gauge on whether they’re going to be making snow if/when it gets cold this week as I’m trying to decide where to go next weekend (per other post I made). The customer service person said they will be trying to make snow this week if/when possible, especially because they’re hosting the governor’s cup on 11-12 March. They said they’re fully committed to being open for the governor’s cup. I asked about Friday or other weekdays this week and they couldn’t commit.

It was a lung buster climb to the top for sure, but a sweet cruiser on fresh courderoy coming down on skinny skis! Cory Chase did in 17 minutes! beat this old fart by 13 minutes!

Governors cup is on Saturday, but other than that, nobody but diehards or locals ski in march in the mid-atl, and fairweather skier DC folks are looking at flowers and tree blossoms and not thinking about winter or skiing anymore,  so probably be ok.

Gonna be there Saturday...normally I do Sundays to avoid the Saturday crowds but with the time change that would be a little rough on me for a day trip. Hopefully there will be a good-sized crowd without it being too busy.

Are there any bumps on off the wall or is the entire mountain still groomed?

All groomed as of Saturday (which is a very good thing given the freeze/thaw)

I'll post this here and level it :)

Wish I could get out there on Wednesday, but Sunday is more likely. Hoping for some bumps on OTW.

I disagree as I would rather ski icy bumps than boring groomed snow.

Well, I'm convinced. Just booked for this weekend at Timberline.  Looks like they have discounted lift tickets if you buy in person as well!

Anyone know how roads are mid mountain, specifically Slopeside?  Driving up tonight, do I bring chains?

TL ops team announced today they’re making snow tonight. Mostly granular conditions today.  No lift lines.  Pretty phenomenal considering I’ve been able to ski from Thanksgiving to mid March in the mid Atlantic

that's kinda like saying you didn't have to put it in 4-wheel drive...but you could've if you had to...prudent decision...just another thing that separates the semi-pros from the recreationals

Had a blast at Timberline this weekend myself, unfortunately I took a high speed spill and shredded my Snowboard pants, so I guess my season is done!  Big thanks to this community for helping me find my feet!
