Hi Explorer,

Here are a couple links to DCSki pages which talk about becoming a ski instructor. The first link is to a message forum thread, the second to an article written by Otto Matheke, an instructor from Liberty Mountain.

He's asking about joining NSP (which almost certainly means he's interested in becoming a patroller) not an instructor.

1) Without current affiliation, you *can* directly join NSP as an "associate". This is to be distinguished from their "auxiliary" members. The former is usually done by people in the process of becoming patrollers at local areas. See:

www.nsp.org , particularly,

http://www.nsp.org/WhatWeAre/Member/becomemember.asp and,

http://www.nsp.org/WhatWeAre/Member/assocmember.asp

2) The local areas are always looking for patrollers. Often people work their way up the "host", "safety team", "patroller" ladder. See:

http://www.skiwhitetail.com/safety.htm

Hope this helps,

Tom / PM

Ugh.. That's what I get for replying to these late at night.

I went searching for links and somehow my mind decided he wanted to be an instructor.

This is the article I *meant* to reference:

http://www.dcski.com/news/1999/12_20_99/skipatrol.shtml

It was written by Jim Chen, a local patroller, and published on DCSki a couple years ago.

Scott - Don't feel bad - your heart was in the right place. My special trick is to write long answers to questions nobody even cares about, let alone asks. At least you answered a related question - grin.

Explorer - if you are serious about joining NSP, you need to be affiliated with an area first. If you want to join one of the patrols at Liberty, Whitetail or Roundtop (which are all NSP and run independently of each other), you can contact me through the Ski Liberty Ski Patrol website (www.skilibertyskipatrol.org) or email me at info@skilibertyskipatrol.org and I'll point you to the right people. Liberty and Whitetail especially are recruiting for next year's candidate class.
