Why is Timberline even open?

Just checked their website to see if they had gotten any snow and opened more trails and it looks like they have just two open and the one beginner lift.   Their FB page had the following post:

"The parts to fix the lift are on their way to Timberline. We will keep you posted on the progress. Today the beginner area is open and LIFT TICKETS are $25. Ski School, Cafeteria and Bunkhouse are open. THANK YOU for your support and understanding. Keep positive thoughts going!"

I guess they had another lift breakdown?   I don't see how/why they are even open this year.    There is no way they can be doing anything other than losing money by being open.

Because, just like at Disney, where people complain and complain about the price...they are still willing to stand in line to pay it!

LOTS of people have long-ago booked trips to Timberline this winter.  Slopeside home and condo rentals which cannot be cancelled, large groups which cannot easily change their plans at this late date, etc.  So they come and if Timberline has even a limited amount of terrain open, they decide to ski there at least one day because it is "easy".

The problem for Timberline and the Valley as a whole is that most of these people won't be coming back next year, if the experience this year is highly negative.

Looks like they are closed now until at least Weds as the lift is repaired (though not sure why they can't run the other triple lift to the top of the mountain).    I wonder if they are even attempting to make snow during this good cold stretch.

"Thanks to our friends, colleagues and neighbors Canaan Valley Resort. It is honoring our multiday MLK weekend lift tickets (Saturday, Sunday, and, today, Monday,). We await replacement bearings on the Triple. Due to ice accumulation at the top on the tower we will re-open Wednesday."

It’s a real shame for people like us who booked ski house rentals months ago. The good thing is CVR is open with plenty of runs open so it looks like we’ll end up spending the whole trip there.

Per Timberline's Facebook, that lift has not been inspected this year. Now the main lift and beginner lifts are down as well, making for the dreaded 0-3 combo.

It might be something about needing new bearings for the triple lift, according to things I've seen online.

It's so sad to see a great place take such a beating.

They'd been running the Silver Queen Triple at half capacity (loading every other chair) for at least the past 5 years due to poor condition.  .. and people wonder why all their equipment is falling apart..

No way.  I have switched to CVR.

BearingBarn.com should solve TL's latest issues.

Let's continue "preventive maintenance" (in late January) today and open the bunny slope back up tomorrow with the triple opening back up on Friday. What a mess...

WOW.  This is some SERIOUS $#!%.  I work in the medical industry and witnessed a Federal investigation involving forged prescriptions.  The Feds don't mess around with this stuff.  Especially, given the massive attention on the opiod crisis.

If these allegations are proven true, this guy is toast.

To me it's a mircale that they are even open now with just 9 trails (and many of them little short ones) open which including only one blue or above and only one from the top of the mountain.    I guess they are still charging full rates too.    I just hope someone steps in this year and takes them over and gets it back to being the great mountain that it can be.

Rain this week must have been pretty destructive to all winter operations up there, but CVR still has at least five major top to bottom routes open.

Wet base...then hard freeze...then its groomed and you get granular sugar on machine tracked ice.  Unless snow is made to blend with the sugar it will be scraped off in a couple hours.  Have at it boys and get back to me on how fun it was.

Could anyone give me the straight scoop on Timberline? We've been coming for years and have loved it (in spite of the lack of amenities and upgrades) - however, we've been absent for the last couple years. This time around, we rented a cabin through the T4SR last fall, however, as we're getting ready to come up for President's Day weekend I've just started reading about the issues with the resort, the owners, the lifts, etc. Why isn't this information being sent out to people so we don't get stuck with a $1000+ cabin rental to ski someplace that can't support us? I see nothing on their Facebook page (or other social media sites) or their website. I've called and left messages, written them, and haven't heard back (yet). Does anyone have the full story on this?

You have 2 resorts within minutes and Snowshoe 2 hours to the south so there are options.  If this is the only time you get to ski this year you will be able to ski.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely not trolling. I've never had the need to check out blogs or reviews in the past, and I recently stumbled across this one after friends have been telling me to stay away from TL. It looked like I would get some honest replies so I registered (and wasn't disappointed). Thank you for the feedback. We'll look at Canaan Valley and nearby locations, however, we're locked into our TL cabin rental, unfortunately. That was the best part of renting on-site ... being able to ski-in / ski-out.

Welcome to the DCSki.com forum, themalks!  Good people here - including many I've later met in person and skied with. The discussions here have shaped my skiing a great deal since I climbed back onto skis 15 or so years ago.  This group even helped me pick out my skis 👍

Sorry about the Timberline situation.  I like that mountain a great deal and have always tried to make the trip there at least once a season.  Not this year.  I'm not one who quickly pushes the panic button, but, as you can see, the place is not being run well at this point.  Those who've already responded have offered suggestions (Wisp, Laurel, Canaan Valley), and I think you'll be much happier there - at least this season.

Good luck.  I hope you'll follow the forums and post.

They did have some posts about the upcoming holiday weekend on FB (though nothing about trails) and then all of the sudden they turned to the pump issue and the neighborhoods around the mountain on a boil water alert.    Their website has gone done before and then brought back up a week or so later.   Not a good year for the valley at all with Timberline in shambles and Canaan Valley mostly having only half of the terrain open all Winter.    Really feel for those homeowners in the area that rely on rental income of their properties over the Winter.

I don't think Timberline will stay dead.   They have a nice ski hill, decent equipment and a good location next to CVR.   Someone (maybe CVR) is going to have to come in there, drop a couple mil to renovate and modernize, and they'll be in good shape.

Thank you for sharing that link, hadn't really kept up with all the details of the situation with Timberline, but after reading that it just makes me sad as we always so loved going to Timberline when our kids were younger with our family or with their church youth groups and renting a nice house not far from the slopes for a reasonable rate.    It was such a gem in this area so close to DC (esp after Corridor H opened) with such a different climate from the DC area with so much varied terrain, a nice laid back atmosphere, lots of natural snow, etc..   Hopefully there will be a miracle in the near future that will allow it to open again, but that likelihood is very slim.

I've seen a false narrative surface on occasion that suggests DCSki goes around deleting and editing user posts and practicing aggressive censorship, and every time this implication is made it's pretty frustrating to me.  There are rare occasions when a post is in clear violation of DCSki's Usage Policy and requires administrative action, but it's infrequent and generally unambiguous.  DCSki never edits a user's post as that's against our policy.  On occasion I will post a message discouraging certain trends in discussion, but that's extraordinarily rare too.

Any time an administrative action is taken, it is automatically logged by DCSki's software.  Over the past 10 years, 49 forum posts (out of a total of 40,462) have been deleted, and many of those were spam from spambots that made it through to the forums.  No posts have been deleted so far in 2019.  In 2018, a total of 5 posts were deleted.  In 2017, only 3 posts were deleted.

To be completely transparent on this process, I am now making a real-time log of these transactions available to any DCSki user, showing all administrative actions starting in 2017.  You can view this log on this page, or simply click the "Admin Actions" link that appears at the top of any Forum page.

Thanks Scott.  We know you prefer positivity and optimism where possible and usually only make suggestions rather than punitive action or censorship.  I suspect Jimmy made some comments out of frustation and decided it better to just walk away.  Might avoid some of the conspiracy theories if users had the ability to totally delete their own post, perhaps within a 12 hour window?  I get that that can kill the flow of a thread but it's really less so than blank posts do because then people can fuel the fire with speculation and rumors..

Users should have the ability to delete their posts -- there should be an edit and delete icon on the top right side of any post you've made that looks like this:

If that's not the case, let me know -- that would be a bug!  Internally, DCSki does log every transition state of a post (including edits and deletes), so if someone accidentally deletes a post I can recover it for them.

I'm not sure how the double-empty post happened, which is why I was asking Jimmy.  There's a strange bug in the forums where a thread somehow splits in two and starts misbehaving that I've never figured out, so when I see anything odd I'm always suspicious it might be due to a bug.

And, checking the log, I don't see any commited edits from Jimmy on his two posts (at least, he didn't click submit on something and then re-submit it again after editing).  It just appears that he somehow posted two empty posts one right after another.  So I'm hoping he can explain in case there's any glitch he encountered.  (If a browser's cache expired and logged out of DCSki in the middle of making a post, I suppose that could cause strange behavior, but not sure if that's what happened in this case.)

Just a thought on that - I've posted while taking a break at work, only to have the web proxy hiccup and blow the secured connection.  When that happens, the post gets nuked and I have to start over again.  Not fun to have written a decent sized post only to have it die that way when trying to submit it.  I don't think any of mine made it thru in those situations, though.  So depending on how his internet connection works, it could be a proxy messing things up.

What's with the double blank posts?

Sorry just having technical difficulties with my iPad. I have never had a post here deleted or edited. Seems like I click in the comment box but my keyboard won’t come up.

Anybody know if a buyer for TL came forward today, would a sale even be possible given all the legal actions against the resort and other owned facilities?

I would call that transparency, pretty impressive, thanks

regarding T-line, now the waiting game begins, hopefully that doesn't mean years of slow decay and abandonment.  That trail system has got to be worth something, It certainly still will be to me if I make it up after a major storm

I feel like all the houses around there would really boost the likelihood of someone coming in and purchasing it (if that is an option). It's not quite a built-in revenue, but better than other ski areas that don't have a robust community built around them.

Slopeside walk to/ski in ski out private lodging was always the main reason groups I ski with chose TL over CV.  Now that there is no "ski" option at TL, CV is back in the list of options.
