Herman Dupre - one of the smartest fellows with an abundance of common sense that I ever met

About 7 or 8 years ago around the time my son was graduating from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA I wrote a short letter to Herman and Sis Dupre.  I covered two topics; I thanked them for their multimillion dollar donation to St. Vincent College (Mr. Dupre was an alumni) which went for building the The Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion.  It's the home to The Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing and my son got to study there when it was brand new.  I also congratulated them for all the good work they and their family did in operating Seven Springs ski area, which is where my son first starting ski instructing in his sophomore year in college.

I'm glad I wrote that letter and expressed my gratitude.  I thought it was very cool to have a benefactor at the college of one of my children who was such an important figure for local skiing at Seven Springs and for the entire ski world with his snowmaking equipment business.

Saint Vincent College, his alma mater, named an educational facility named after him in 2009 following a gift from Dupre family. The Sis and Herman Dupre Science Pavilion provides classrooms, laboratories and offices for the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing. Dupre graduated in 1953 from Saint Vincent, where he studied industrial management and chemistry.

Herman Dupre is survived by his wife of 63-years Mary “Sis” (McSwigan), nine daughters: Denise, Laura, Rosi, Anni, Jan, Heidi, Gretl, Michele, and Renee, 29 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren: Ava, Berit, Calvin, Cam, Casey, Daisy, Edel, Eli, Emily, Gordon, Gus, Heidi, Henry, Herman Robert, Izzy, Lars, Libby, Liza, Marcella, Maria, Max. Mia, Nelson, Noah, Ollie, Pauline, Sabina, Shannon, Sophia, Tess, and Tilly.

A private funeral service is being held. A celebration of his life will be planned in the future.

In honor of Herman’s life, the family is accepting contributions to The Sis and Herman Dupre Science Pavilion at St. Vincent College.

Sounds like a great guy, never heard of him but wish I had some stories to tell for his family as that is a great idea! I am sure they would be priceless

Many, many years ago, well before "the real world" pulled me back into its grasp of sundry obligations, I was once a young, brash ski instructor at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, a family-run ski area nestled deep within Laurel Highlands of Western Pennsylvania. While there, I had the privilege of learning a thing or two from a gentleman whose vision, inquisitive nature and entrepreneurial spirit transformed the ski industry not only America, but around the world. If ever there was a person who could concoct a perfect elixir that combined fun, hospitality, humility, nature and science, it was Herman K. Dupre. Thank you, Herman, and may you rest in peace.
